Top 6 IoT Security Tips You Need for Your Smart Devices

The Internet of Things (IoT) keeps getting better with the advancement of technology. We often hear of new devices that operate using IoT and the amazing things they can do to improve the quality of our lives. The connection between my Spectrum deals for internet and my smartphone is a basic example of IoT. Similarly, the connection that exists between a Wi-Fi router and home security alarms, security cameras, automated gates, lights, etc. are all examples of the IoT.
It is absolutely incredible to see how these devices use the internet to communicate with each other and carry out intricate functions without any human intervention. However, the security risks are also getting more sophisticated. That’s why it is imperative to learn how one can enhance the IoT security of smart devices.

#1. Name Your Wi-Fi Router

Since the internet is at the heart of all IoT devices, you must keep its gateway safe. By naming your Wi-Fi router, you give it a unique identity that is specifically yours. If you keep using the name or credentials provided by the manufacturer, you’re essentially leaving yourself vulnerable to cyber-attacks every time you use that unprotected network. Make sure to come up with a unique name for your router and avoid using numbers of your home address, date of birth, or cellphone, etc.

#2. Encrypt the Wi-Fi Network

Now that your router has a unique identity, it is time that you encrypt your network. You can encrypt your network while setting up your router. Choosing strong network encryption like WAP2 ensures that your Wi-Fi connection is secure for all online communication

#3. Use Two-Factor Authentication

It is better to choose two-factor authentication to access your Wi-Fi network. Doing so adds an extra layer of security that keeps your network secure from breaches. This extra security measure can be in the form of a code or a one-time password that is sent to you via email or text message. This additional authentication will help you be aware if anyone tries to get unauthorized access to your network.

#4. Set Up a Guest Network

Another way of protecting your Wi-Fi connection is by setting up a guest network. This way you can allow your guests, friends, or colleagues to use your internet connection while keeping your personal network completely separate. This will help you keep your IoT devices and your personal network safe from any breaches or intrusions.

#5. Update All Relevant Software Regularly

Updating the relevant security software on a regular basis is important as well. If you don’t update your IoT devices, they become vulnerable to cyber threats. Updates often include security patches for existing problems and bugs, etc. IoT devices such as your internet connection, security cameras, automated gates and lights, smoke detectors, and other home security appliances, etc. become compromised if they are not updated regularly. Updates are typically made available by the manufacturers. However, it is better to check  screen monitoring software updates manually too.

#6. Use a Strong Password

Make sure to change the Wi-Fi password that is set as default by the manufacturer. Using a strong password is another way of exercising IoT security for your smart devices. Most people use the password set as default by the manufacturer thinking it would not be public knowledge and that their network would be safe. That is a mistake. Most default passwords can be found over the internet and can be easily used to get access to your network. Therefore, make sure to set up a strong password that is over 8 characters and use a combination of alphabets, numbers, and special characters.
